UV stabilizers

BTC Speciality Chemical Distribution sells and markets the full range of BASF UV stabilizers as well as selected complementary 3rd party UV stabilizers.

Application fields for light stabilizers

BTC offers a whole range of standard UV stabilizers which are suitable for every polymer application for protection against accelerated weathering. Today, protection from UV radiation not only plays an important role in nature, but also in the world of plastics. Polymer degradation is omnipresent – especially in outdoor applications.

Longterm protection

In order that plastics remain in form for as long as possible, they need physical and/or chemical longterm protection against UV radiation. Just as skin can be protected with sun lotion, so can a plastic be protected by a UV absorber. These compounds absorb the UV radiation and transform the incident energy into harmless heat. The great advantage of organic UV absorbers over substances such as commercially available carbon black or TiO2 is that they neither compromise colour nor transparency and are easy to disperse in the polymer. This also allows transparent or coloured polymer applications to be protected against UV radiation without problems.

In contrast to the physically active UV absorbers, HALS (Hindered Amine Light Stabilizers) react chemically. HALS achieve their high protection level, because each stabilizer molecule can react many times. However, monomeric HALS are subject to migration. Oligemeric HALS do not migrate, if their structure is matched to the application polymer.

BTC provides a wide range of Uvinul® light stabilizers for the application in following plastic materials:

  • Polyolefins
With its excellent physical and chemical properties, Uvinul® 5050 H is BTC's recommendation when it comes to light stabilization of polyolefins.
  • PVC (polyvinylchloride) and PA (polyamide)
Uvinul® 3039 is a liquid UV absorber, which, as a consequence of its good compatibility with plasticizers, is extremely well suited for use with PVC-p (plasticized PVC) and plastisols. Uvinul® 3035 offers excellent performance in the protection of PVC-u (unplasticized PVC).
  • ABS (acryle butadiene styrene) and PS (polystyrene)
For ABS and PS Uvinul® 4050 H is a highly effective light stabilizer, which also exhibits very good compatibility with pigments.
  • PC (polycarbonate) and PET (polyethylene)
Uvinul® 3030 is especially suitable for the use in polymers at high processing temperatures such as PC and PET. It also offers the processing advantage that it does not lead to the commonly experienced deposition on the cooling roller in the manufacture of PC sheets. Moreover, Uvinul® 3030 confers excellent protection against yellowing for highly transparent polycarbonate parts without impairing clarity or base colour.
  • PMMA (Polymethylmethacrylat) and PU (polyurethanes)
As a very UV-stable polymer, PMMA is found in many outdoor applications and is additionally stabilized for long-term applications. BTC offers  the Benzotriales like Uvinul® 3026, 3027, 3028, 3030, 3033 P, 3035 and 3039.
